Consider the following to help keep your forklift in top shape and your operators safe:

1. Service and planned maintenance are important. One of the best ways to keep your forklift operating safely and reliably is to have a regular service and maintenance schedule in place (Planned Maintenance). If you rent a forklift, it may be included in the rental package, but if you purchase or lease a forklift, you’ll likely need to set up a schedule yourself, or purchase a planned maintenance plan from your forklift dealer. Whatever the situation, the important thing is that your forklifts are regularly inspected as per the owner’s manual.

2. Thorough examination is a must. If you own or operate a forklift, you are required by law to ensure it meets safety requirements.

3. A daily check should always be performed. In addition to regular service, there should be a process in place to make sure that checks are carried out at the start of each day or shift. This ensures the truck is in a safe condition to operate. At a minimum, your daily check should include:

Fluid Levels

Hydraulic System

Masts and Chains

The safe storage of gas is essential as it has the potential to burn or explode when it meets a source of ignition. Remember these basic guidelines:

Have a dedicated, well-vented storage area for gas cylinders

Cylinders should be secured and stored in an upright position

Keep the area clear and tidy

You should apply the same restriction for both full and empty cylinders

You should also have a dedicated, well-ventilated area for charging trucks away from flames. When charging your forklift, be sure to wear the appropriate clothing and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
